Abstract

The Kite Runner has a special meaning for Khaled Hosseini. Since its release in 2003, it has attracted worldwide attention. In The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini tells a story about betrayal and redemption of human nature against the background of Afghanistan"s specific national context and national trauma. Amir and Hassan were childhood playmates, but Amir’s father valued Hassan more. Afterwards, Amir did not come forward because of cowardice when he was raped in Hassan, which left a wound in Amir’s heart. Before long, war broke out in Afghanistan and Amir was forced to flee to the United States, but that memory still haunted him. Eventually, he chose to return to his motherland and rescue Hassan"s child Sohrab. He succeeded in realizing his self-redemption through narration. The study of the theme of the growth and redemption of this work has always been a hot topic for scholars at home and abroad, but they pay more attention to identity pursuit, racial discrimination and so on. There are few studies on trauma theory. As a consequence, this paper aims to analyze Amir’s redemption journey from the perspective of trauma theory, and analyze the causes of trauma as well as the way to heal the trauma. It also reflects the social trauma from the personal trauma and further enriches the connotation of the novel.
