Application of TPR Teaching Method in Children's English Teaching

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to elaborate the difference between TPR teaching method and traditional teaching method, and how to apply TPR teaching method to real English classroom. Furthermore, at the end of this paper, some attention problems are put forward. Childhood is the most crucial and unduplicated period of life in children’s brain and language development. Their unique potential in foreign language learning can be developed. Total Physical Responses (TPR) is regarded as a popular teaching method in early childhood English education. It advocates associating language learning with performance and teaching foreign language through physical reactions.

摘 要:本文将TPR教学法与传统教学法进行对比,并详细说明应用TPR教学法进行教学需要采用怎样的教学模式,最后会提出几个需要注意的问题。儿童期是学习语言最好的和最关键的时期,他们所特有的外语学习的潜能都能被开发出来。在儿童英语教学中一个受欢迎的教学法就是TPR教学法。TPR教学法把言语和行为联系在一起,并用肢体语言来教授外语。

1 Introduction

1.1 Research Purpose

The foreign language teaching in our country has focused on motivating learners' interest in learning. Much attention has been paid to the development of English learning environment. Educators emphasize that learners should study in a relaxing atmosphere. Traditional teaching method should be carefully implemented with more appropriate teaching method to cater for the physical and mental development of the children. This thesis aims to study the teaching principle and teaching mode of TPR teaching method earnestly, and arouse instructor's attention to TPR teaching method, because it is a useful and scientific method in the English education for young learners. TPR teaching method is one of the body-reaction teaching methods. It emphasizes the interactivity of the body and the vividness of teaching, therefore,learners can more intuitively understand the learning from games and feel fun of learning English. TPR teaching method can also motivate learners to learn English by participating in different activities and allow them to experience English in language environment. This teaching method attempts to create a casual learning environment to eliminate learner’s anxiety and encourage learners understand English and use English to communicate with others, instead of correcting grammar mistakes.
