Abstract:William Somerset Maugham, one of the greatest realist writers in Britain, is famed for his aloof style in his works. The Moon and Sixpence, one of Mr. Maugham’s most famous novels, tells a story about Charles Strickland, who left for Paris to realise his dream of painting in his forties with a sudden farewell to his wife and children and quitting his job as a broker. The notions in the book referring to marriage, love and relationships between two genders are unconventional and even peculiar. One of the most magnificent contents lies in Mr. Maugham’s writing about the views of love of Mrs. Strickland, Blanche Stroeve and Charles Strickland. Mrs. Strickland hardly found ways to support the family when she understood that her husband abandoned her due to his dream rather than another womam, with the ending of respects from her children and others. Blanche Stroeve was a woman enchanted by Charles Strickland. She determined to divorce with her husband to accompany Charles Strickland leading an impoverished life, and at last committed suicide because of her disability to win his love, whilst Charles Strickland regarded love as a sort of sickness and women an instrument to offset his desire. This paper is composed of four chapters: Chapter One is the introduction, which gives a brief introduction about the fiction, its author Mr. Maugham and views of love; Chapter Two discusses the three main characters’ views of love; Chapter Three, by linking to the author’s background, explores Mr. Maugham’s view of love which can be spotted in the three main characters. And Chapter Four is the conclusion.
Key Words: The Moon and Sixpence; Views of love; William Somerset Maugham

Chapter One. Introduction
1.1 About the Novel and the Author
The Moon and Sixpence discussed deeply the topic of contradiction between life and dream, love and self. The moon is on behalf of dream, which is alluring but unapproachable, while sixpence represents the real life, which always prompts people to pursue practical things. This work was favoured by its readers around the world, and had been translated into numerous languages and put on the big screens.
The twenty-first century witnessed huge changes that happened in the human world. These changes have led to and are intriguing many alterations in people’s lifestyle. Human have never enjoyed so much material comfort before, and at the same time, we also had never troubled so much by vacancy in our spiritual world. Under this backdrop, empathy about the difficulty to choose one between the moon and sixpence consists of one of the reasons why this novel is still preferred by readers at present.
