Abstract: Love in the Time of Cholera is a novel written by Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez, which is a love story based on romanticism and realism. It shows people all the possibilities of love and presents a romantic drama: the romantic madness of youth, the secret and tenacity of middle age and the rational wisdom of old age. This thesis mainly focuses on the analysis of the image of heroine Ariza, which concentrates on the discussion of Ariza’s infatuation and further explores the reasons why he has waited his lover for half a century, finally reveals the image value of him.

摘要:《霍乱时期的爱情》是哥伦比亚作家加夫列尔·加西亚·马尔克斯的著作,是一部基于浪漫主义和现实主义的爱情小说,它向人们展示了爱情中的种种可能,为人们呈现了一出浪漫的爱情话剧,演绎了浪漫疯狂的青年之爱,隐秘顽强的中年之爱和睿智成熟的老年之爱。本论文旨在对主人公阿里萨进行人物形象分析,着重讨论阿里萨对费尔明娜的痴情,进而分析其背后的原因,探究主人公阿里萨所传递的人物形象价值。

1.Introduction
Gabriel García Márquez was a Colombian novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter and journalist. As one of the most significant authors of the 20th century and one of the best authors in the Spanish language, he was been awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. García Márquez combined realism with fantasy perfectly to create a mythical history of Columbia and the entire South American continent. His magnum opus includes One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera.
Gabriel García Márquez was born on March 6, 1927 in Columbia Aracataca. He spent his childhood at his grandfather’s house, who was a kind and radicalized retired military officer. His grandmother was very learned, fulling of myths and ghost stories, therefore García Márquez received good edification of folk literature and culture. In the spiritual world of Márquez in his childhood, his hometown was a strange world filled with man and ghosts, which became an important source of his creation later. In 1947, Márquez entered the University of Bogota to study law, and began his literary creation. During the college years, Márquez read lots of the poetry of Spanish golden age, which laid a solid foundation for his later literary creation.
Upon the publication of One Hundred Years of Solitude in 1967, it was praised by critics as a masterpiece and translated into a variety of languages, helping Márquez win the 1982 Nobel Prize for literature. In 1985, Love in the Time of Cholera was published. The New York Times appraised it as one of the greatest love stories in the world. This work shows all the possibility of love, describing the dedication, loyalty and fate of love for us.
