The interest for films motivates me to initiate this topic, and at the beginning, I was confident enough to choose this researching area I am familiar with. However, when I continued my paper, different problems appeared one after another. I had trouble in making a clear writing structure and choosing appropriate supporting theories. Fortunately, I communicated with my friends and teachers, who inspired and guided me a lot by suggesting that I should choose a practical and scientific theory to support my paper. Special acknowledgements must go to my supervisor Lv Hongyan, who was never tired of reading and correcting my paper, and gave me some constructive suggestions.

I also want to express my gratitude for my friends who kept encouraging me when I felt depressed and frustrated in picking up the essence of endless writing resources.

A Study of Film Title Translation from the Perspective of Eco-translatology

Abstract: This essay firstly compares concerning translation theories, which are widely applied to guide translation practice, to conclude their studying focuses. Then, through the comparison, the authoress will show the characteristics of eco-translatology and how it balances different factors in the whole process. And finally, this essay elaborates the comparatively new translation theory----Eco-translatology proposed by Chinese Professor Hu Gengshen to make the best use of our cultural soft power based on the combination of the traditional values and scientific theories. In this process, how proper translation methods that are be applied accordingly to film types and themes will be explained in details. The authoress aims to provide a new study point for translators to make the highest esthetic values and increase their work’s popularity.

摘 要:本文首先将对受众度较广的翻译理论进行比较分析,总结不同翻译理论的出发点。在此基础上,指出“生态翻译学”在协调翻译主体方面的特点。既而,以胡庚申教授提出的“生态翻译学”为依托,通过将传统价值观与科学的理论相结合的方法指导翻译实践,提升文化软实力。最后,从该理论的应用方法层面分析,如何将电影片名依据不同的主题以及电影风格进行翻译。以为译者提供新的研究视角,实现译文最大的美学价值,创造更高的商业效益,并提升其传播效果。

1. Introduction

1.1 Research Background

Cultural output has developed into an effective way to widely spread the ideas of countries and set up their international images during the frequent cultural communications in the context of globalization. The impact is not immediate but permeable, which requires film-makers and translators to guarantee the quality of their works all the time. There are mainly two factors contributing to the frequent cultural exchanges. On one hand, if all countries can take advantage of others’ cultures reasonably, that culture communication will meantime promote bilateral economic development; on the other hand, for the culture itself, this business can make it more possible for these countries to enhance their own cultural vitality by learning from and absorbing the essence of other countries.

The film uses beautiful lighting effects and accurate sound characteristics to realize artistic expression and description of the social and mental situations of the country, which is a primal component of cross-cultural communication, because people can easily gain emotional and spiritual resonance by watching it. Its contents can also penetrate every aspect of the receivers’ lives and deepen mutual understanding between different regions or countries. And it is as same as other forms of titles, the film title can attract the attention of the audience immediately at first sight. Moreover, the title translation can influence subjective feelings of the audience, as well as affect its publicity and box office. These factors decide that film producers have to choose the most appropriate title to make it qualified with suspense and suggestion. As for the films exported to other countries, different levels of aesthetic needs must be fully optimized.

China has not only actively introduced foreign culture but also encouraged our culture to go out, ever since 1979 when our country carried out the policy of reform and opening up to the world. In this process, Chinese actors and actresses have always created better works to undertake the mission of promoting our great traditional cultures and showing the whole world the real face of China. Apart from that, the big number of Chinese audience has also become the important commercial force in the world film market, which indicates that if the market wanted to absorb more Chinese audience, one of the bottom things would be applying a more understandable theory to guide translation. And translators certainly should also have a comprehensive understanding about the cultural characteristics among the whole world. The theory of Eco-translatology can properly meet above requirements because it has combined Darwinian which emphasizes adaptation and selection and ancient Chinese philosophical notion which stresses people’s respect for nature, which indicates that this theory is a universal theory with Chinese characteristics.
